St. Patrick’s Day Parade In New York City – What You Need To Know Before You Go

Published on March 15, 2018 by teammvr

The city of lights is about to turn into the city of green. New York City is one city in the US with the biggest Irish population since they sailed over from Europe and landed on the shores of Ellis Island. On this day, either celebrate by diving back into history and learning about your ancestors or go out and celebrate like the Irish really do.

Spot any and everything you own that is green and come out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in NYC. Throughout the city any and every bar will be hosting an epic St. Patty’s day party. It will not be a hard time to find one.

What makes NYC so special for St. Patrick’s Day is the parade that happens every year. During the parade, participants will walk down 5th Avenue and pass by many of New York’s attractions (including the St. Patrick’s Cathedral). The parade starts at 11 am on 44th street. It will then march up Fifth Avenue- Past the Cathedral at 50th Street- then all the way to 79th street. This is an all-day parade that will finish around 5 pm, so you have ample opportunity to view it and join if you so choose.

Many participants in the parade are people who have grown up with a strong Irish background. You will get to experience bagpipes, bands, and even some Irish dancers. Irish dance is similar to what we know, tap. But they focus on the way the legs look (making sure they are straight) as well as the sounds of the feet. Think of a mix of Tap and Ballet. At the parade you will get to see many people owning their Irish heritage. As well as some bag pipe marching bands, and so so many kilts. The parade is something not to miss as it is a great homage to the culture but also its super fun!

Pro Tip: The parade does pass by many bars so if you really want to celebrate like the Irish, grab a drink and wait for the parade to come to you. Cheers!
